Headaches due to migraine are uncomfortable conditions. The activity becomes disrupted by a headache and continues to throb. Neurologist at Cleveland Clinic Zubair Ahmed said there was no specific treatment that could 100 percent eliminate migraines.
However, migraines can be minimized by applying a healthy lifestyle and avoiding stress. Quoted from MensHealth, here are seven tips for avoiding migraines.
1. Take riboflavin or magnesium supplements.
Some supplements including vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and magnesium have been shown to prevent migraines. The study, published in the journal Headache, said those who consumed 600 milligrams of magnesium felt the migraine that was attacking was diminishing. In addition, 400 milligrams of riboflavin have been shown to prevent migraines for about two months.
2. Avoid excessive stress.
Stress is one of the main triggers of migraines. "Stress releases many chemical elements in the brain or makes migraines worse. During feeling stressed, chemicals including epinephrine and cortisol are released into the blood. Stress during work days sometimes results in migraines on weekends," Ahmed said.
3. Ask for a prescription for medication to the doctor
According to Gary Jay's UNC Health Care neurologist, drugs for migraine sufferers are divided into two categories: abortive and preventive. Abortive medications are given when migraine comes with the aim of stopping the onset of migraine. One drug that includes abortives is a triptan that stimulates serotonin in the brain and reduces pain due to inflammation.
4. Having sex
Do not underestimate having sex because this activity turns out to be healthy for the body. A study in 2013 found that 60 percent of people who had sex when migraine felt less headaches.
5. Stop consuming processed foods
The habit of eating fast food is one of the causes of frequent migraines. Jay said diet and diet had different effects on each patient. "It's important to identify what foods trigger migraines. Once identified, these foods should be avoided," Jay said.
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) found in foods such as soups, pizza, chips, and chinese food has proven to be a trigger for migraines. Drinks such as soda, energy drinks, caffeinated drinks, and those containing artificial sweeteners should also be avoided to prevent headaches.
