Allow Diabetes Patients to Eat Mango?

Mango is a fruit that thrives in tropical countries like Indonesia. Fruit with yellow flesh contains high fiber, antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin B6, Vitamin E, and K. However, this fruit is also believed to contain high calories and sugar. This is why many people, especially diabetics, avoid consuming this fruit.

However, is this true? Mirriam Polunin, the author of the book Healing Foods, said that mangoes contain enzymes that help break down and digest protein and fiber. Mangoes are also able to maintain the digestive function to work efficiently.

So, how much mango consumption is recommended? Dr Anil Bhroskar, diabetes expert from SL Raheja Hospital said that diabetics can still consume half a mango every day. However, they are not allowed to consume mango in the form of juice. "They also have to maintain an hour's distance between eating and eating mangoes," he said. Bhoraskar also recommends that we check blood sugar levels after eating a mango. "If blood sugar levels exceed 25 percent, then don't consume the mango again," he said.

According to him, every food item has a different response to a person's body. Therefore, it is very important to know how the body responds to each food item on different days and this is known as interpersonal variation.

"Consumption of other food ingredients in addition to mango can also have varied effects," he added.

Dr. Rinki Kumari, from Forts Hospital, said that mangoes are rich in fiber and contain many antioxidants such as zeaxanthin, quercetin, astragalin, beta-carotene and Vitamin B6. All of these substances help improve brain health and function.
